With only two more events left in 2022, the UFC was thrown into a frenzy Wednesday when reports came out that Jiri Prochazka had to withdraw from the main event at UFC 282 with a crazy shoulder injury, causing the UFC to move the scheduled initially co-main event of Jan Blachowicz vs Magomed Ankalaev to the main event.
The fight is also now officially for the belt in the Light Heavyweight Division as the injured Prochazka decided to vacate the title so as not to hold up the division. All of this change has left someone out of the picture, that being Glover Teixeira, who was slated to be competing for the title against Prochazka prior to the injury.
How did Glover Get Here?
Ariel Helwani reported Wednesday night that he spoke to Glover’s team and was told that the UFC offered Teixeria the decision to either fight Ankalaev on December 10 or he would have no upcoming fight. Teixeria reportedly asked for more time to prepare for Ankalaev or a rematch against Jan Blachowicz. The UFC declined both of these options, so Teixeria now has no upcoming fights scheduled and currently has no guess as to what is next for his career.
Why is this a Huge Loss for Teixeira?
Glover Teixeira was 28 seconds away from defending his belt at UFC 275 when Jiri Prochazka submitted him. The MMA world was ablaze, with many calling it a top 3 fight of all time. Everyone knew that a rematch was needed; however, questions around an aging Teixeria had many wondering if a rematch would ever come to fruition.
When UFC 282 was originally announced, many rejoiced as we wouldn’t have to wait long to see these two clashes once again inside the octagon. Time is of the essence in this rematch as no one knows how long a 43-year-old Teixeria will be able to continue to compete in the sport at a high level. Truly everything surrounding Teixeria’s career is time sensitive which is why it’s egregious if Teixeira’s account of negotiations is true.
Glover Teixeira has had many stumbles in his career, going back to the beginning of his career when he had issues with citizenship causing him to be unable to compete during much of his prime. After fighting through adversity after adversity, the whole MMA world celebrated when Teixeira pulled off the upset over Blachowicz, making him the Champion. The fact that Glover’s shot to reclaim his title is being taken away from him for reasons out of his control is absolutely heartbreaking, but what makes it worse is the fact that it’s due to the UFC trying to force Ankalaev into the spotlight. No one would complain if Ankalaev had a couple more fights before getting a shot at the belt, especially if that meant that we’d see Teixeira and Blachowicz go at it again, both trying to reclaim the title they once held. However, out of greed and the prospect of making a new star, they decide to betray one of their oldest stars in the ultimate act of betrayal.
